Ammonites are an extinct group of marine anaimals of the subclass Ammonoide in the class Cephalopoda, phylum Mollusca, They are excellent index fossils, and it is often possible to link the rock layer i which they are found to specific geological time periods. Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossils, possessing the typically ribbed spiral-form shell. These creatures lived in the seas between 240 - 65 million years ago, when they became extinct along with the dinosaurs. They belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, which includes their living relatives the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus.
